Holocaust Survivor George Starkman

George Starkman Day
WHEREAS, George Starkman resides within the limits of the City of Englewood,
New Jersey for more than fifteen years, and was born in Kalish, Poland;
and
WHEREAS, George Starkman’s parents were killed by the Nazis during
the Holocaust while he was interned at several concentration camps, escaping
when he could, only to be recaptured later. He was forced to do back-breaking
labor while working in a rock quarry, and was able to save himself by
climbing out of a cattlecar bound for the Treblinka death camp and jumping
from the moving train; and
WHEREAS, George Starkman embodies the indominable spirit of Jewish survival.
Sadly, he was the only surviving member of his immediate family. He immigrated
to the United States of America on Labor Day in 1945 and began his American
dream by starting an embroidery manufacturing business, married, and had
three children; and
WHEREAS, George Starkman, a member of Congregation Ahavath Torah, within
the limits of the City of Englewood, will be gathering and celebrating
in the presence of family and friends in fulfilling a mitzvah of a lifetime;
and
WHEREAS, George Starkman will be dedicating a Torah in honor of his family
and all those that were killed in the Holocaust on Sunday, October 28th,
2007.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Michael J. Wildes, Mayor of the City of Englewood,
do hereby proclaim Sunday, October 28th, 2007 as GEORGE STARKMAN DAY and
encourage all residents of the City of Englewood to pay honor and tribute
to this distinguished citizen; friend; and neighbor in hopes that we will
all remember his journey and never forget the lessons and experiences
learned from the Holocaust.
